Cops record statements from 10 over Jan 27 embassy protest

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded statements from 10 individuals in connection with the protest in front of the Swedish and Dutch embassies here last Friday (Jan (27).

City police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said a few more individuals had been identified and would be called up for questioning as well.

"We have opened investigations under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012," he told reporters after attending the City police monthly assembly on Thursday (Feb 2).

It was reported that representatives from a group of more than 30 NGOs gathered outside the Swedish embassy here on Friday to hand over a protest note against the burning of the Holy Quran by a far-right politician in Sweden.

Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisations (Mapim) Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid told Bernama that the protest note had been handed over to a representative of Sweden's ambassador to Malaysia Dr Joachim Bergstrom.

This came after the provocative action of Rasmus Paludan, leader of Denmark's far-right Stram Kurs, for burning a copy of the Holy Quran in Stockholm, Sweden, on Jan 21.

Paludan had held a number of demonstrations in the past where he had burned the Quran, including in April last year.

At least 80 people gathered outside the Dutch embassy on Friday while 400 were believed to have gathered outside the Swedish embassy here.
